I spent yesterday at Finnish Internet Forum and listening to the first day of #EuroDIG proceedings. At the first, a lot of the conversation was around the EU Parliament AI Act and on application of machine learning in general (yes, it was called AI by the speakers, but blah on that). The second topic of interest to me was decentralized social media, and whether a European perspective could change what it is.

Meanwhile here on fedi, there was another storm in a teacup on #P92 #Threads and #Meta. I posted a quick-take thread on that already yesterday, as well as the one I did the last time. FWIW, I agree with @chrismessina, @gruber, @dangillmor, @stux et al that pre-emptive blocking is misguided and whatever they're launching, is as much an opportunity as it is a threat. But it's worth looking at what actions make sense, though.

I continue to be dubious about Meta's actual federation aims, but that doesn't mean pre-emptive fediblocks would be a right solution.

However, I also have a theory of how they MIGHT build federation, if they truly wanted to
a) bring about something that is missing
b) gain a foothold
c) be hard to fediblock
